North Carolina requires that students under age 18 pass Driver Education before being issued a Driving Eligibility Certificate to drive. The Driving Eligibility Certificate is available in the school's main office, a parent must be present to sign the certificate. The training consists of class work and on-the-road driving instruction. The class work is taught after school in two week sessions several times during the fall and spring semesters. Sessions may also be offered in June and July. Sessions and their starting dates are publicized through the school announcements; students interested in taking a class should sign up in the main office when the new classes are announced.
Classes are held in a small red brick building located behind the tennis courts. Students do not need to sign up for a class as part of the school registration process, as there is no academic credit for this course. Driving may be done during students' physical education periods, after school, Saturdays or during the summer. Students who do not pass the class work in Drivers Education before age fifteen will most likely have some delay before they will be able to complete the driving component to receive their permit. Students must now have a driving permit for one full year (with no violations) before they may receive a six months provisional limited license. After a student holds such license for six months with no infractions, he or she may be issued a regular NC license.
The Dropout Prevention Driver's License legislation reflects a coordinated statewide effort to motivate and encourage students to complete high school. The revocation of a student's driving permit or license will result if a student is unable to maintain adequate academic progress or drops out of school. Adequate academic progress will be evaluated at the end of the semester. A student must pass 70% of their courses each semester in order to be eligible to receive a Driving Eligibility Certificate. Students who do not meet these criteria will be reported to DMV and will have either their permit or license revoked. Also, a student who drops out of school will lose his or her driver's permit or license.
