Green Schools

Our BCS Green School site has been 'remodeled' to bridge schools from our school system level to the NC State level and beyond. By using the same organization and categories with rubrics, our schools will be allowed to progress more easily and with a clearer understanding of potential pathways to higher levels of accomplishment, perhaps state and even national recognition.

BCS Green Schools Program Goals
  • Recognize our schools’ efforts pertaining to environmental awareness, energy savings and water conservation
  • Construct a manageable awards program that engages students, teachers and the community
  • Easy application process
  • Reward efforts at a recognition ceremony
  • Elevate the program by connecting community partnerships
Our BCS Green Schools Program has received a great deal of support from

        1.      Robin Cape and her Reading Riding and Retrofit EPA Grant;

        2.
Linda Giltz, Land of Sky Regional Council, initiatives and support of the RRR Grant;

        3.
Dr. Jon Snover, Director of AB Tech's Global Institute for Sustainability Technologies (GIST)

During the past year, the U.S. Education Department's Green Ribbon Schools Program launched along with the NC Green Schools Program. As the RRR Grant came to the end of its cycle, Robin Cape continued her environmental work at both the state and national level and has developed a transition site from Reading Riding and Retrofit to the RRR NC Green Schools Program.

As we proceed with our new system, schools working towards initial recognition and a BCS Green Schools Banner will follow the guidelines within the BCS website.

To achieve recognition, a school must engage in activities in 3 of the 5 categories and score at least 30 points. An intent to apply must be filled in and emailed or faxed to Kay McLeod before January 15, 2013 in order to be considered for recognition this school year. The completed application must be submitted by April 23, 2013.

Our recognition ceremony will take place during the May Board of Education Meeting.

After attaining BCS GS status, schools will transition to RRR NC Green Schools to register and earn recognition at that level through the scoring scale provided there  http://www.reading-riding-retrofit.org
