North Buncombe Middle School’s ESL Program provides educational opportunities for students leaning English as a second language.  Our program allows students to keep their own cultural background while at the same time gaining the language skills that will allow these students to become productive members of society.  Services offered to NBMS ESL students include translating for parent conference, school documents that go home, assists classroom teachers with parent phone calls and permission slips.

Our ESL program’s paramount goal is for each of these students to achieve grade level proficiency in reading, writing, and math as a result of this program.  We work towards this goal at NBMS by using pull out classes each day.  At some points, our ESL teacher co-teaches with content teachers and assists ESL student in completing assignments.

The ESL Program's ultimate goal is that each Limited English Proficient student in our system eventually reach grade-level English proficiency in all domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as measured by the IDEA Proficiency Test (IPT) and state academic assessments.
