What is the Migrant Education Program?
The MEP is a federally funded program that assists migrant students in achieving academic success. It is free and confidential.

Children must be between 3 and 21 years of age and the family must have moved to Buncombe County within the past 3 years seeking agricultural work in the fields or in a nursery.

What does the word “migrant” mean?

A person who comes to Buncombe County seeking temporary or seasonal work in agriculture. This includes planting, picking, cultivating, harvesting, or packing agricultural products or working on a dairy farm or nursery.

Why is a special program for migrant students necessary?
Migrant work is by definition temporary or seasonal, creating difficulties for migrant families who move frequently. Students face many obstacles in achieving academic success.
It is difficult to achieve educational success if the student:
  • Speaks limited English.
  • Has interrupted schooling due to frequent moves.
  • Is unfamiliar with the U.S. or local educational system.
  • Cannot receive help from parents with school assignments.
  • Does not know where to go for help with social services and medical issues.
Parents of migrant students are vital to the success of the program. They assist in prioritizing and evaluating the services provided.

What services does the MEP offer?
  • Initial visit by the recruiter to the home to assess the needs of the family and child.
  • Home visits to bring materials and follow student progress.
  • Interpretations at school conferences.
  • Supplemental resources and academic support.
  • Referrals and transportation to community appointments.
  • Parent meeting to discuss ways to help students succeed in school.
  • Assistance in transferring records to new schools.
