Curriculum

Reading
Second graders want to read, listen to, and talk about a wide range ofbooks including chapter books, informational books, and poems. Thesestudents expect what they read to make sense. They absorb language andideas as they read. At this stage, they are skillful and confident inusing word attack skills to make predictions about words and meaning.They are beginning to read silently for extended periods of time.

Writing
Second grade students write for pleasure, for recording observationsand experiences, and for conveying information. They write severalsentences on one topic. Their writing has a clear purpose, with somedetail, and with a sense of story. They understand that text can bechanged and are beginning to revise and edit. They use more standardspelling than “temporary” phonetic spelling.

Mathematics
The mathematics curriculum is organized into five strands:
(1) number and operations; (2) measurement; (3) geometry; (4) dataanalysis and probability; and, (5) algebra. Problem-solving strategiesare embedded into each of the 5 strands.

At the second grade level, students will demonstrate a greaterconsistency than first grade children in applying mathematicalknowledge and processes. However, while second grade students can domuch more than has been expected of them in the past, it is importantto recognize that they still learn best by exploring with manipulatives.

Social Studies
Second graders continue to use and reinforce skills introduced inkindergarten and first grade. They examine a variety of neighborhoodsand recognize the multiple roles of individuals and families. The localgovernment is studied.

Science
The focus for second grade students is analyzing collected data over aperiod of time to make predictions and understand changes. ScienceConcepts: animal life cycles, changes in weather, changes in propertiesof matter, sound

Art/Music
Arts Education includes four separate and distinct disciplines; dance,music, theatre arts, and visual arts—each with its own body ofknowledge and skills, The intent of the National Standards for ArtsEducation, along with the standard courses of study in each area, isthat a comprehensive understanding of one or more of the arts isaccomplished by each student throughout the K-12 Program.

Health/PE
The Healthful Living Education program promotes behaviors thatcontribute to a healthful life-style and improved quality of life forall students. The Healthful Living Education portions of the NCStandard Course of Study support and reinforce the goals and objectivesof its two major components—health education and physical education.
