How to assist with homework:

• Provide a regular time to do homework and have a quiet area with the TV off.

• Check your child’s homework folder each night.

• Make sure they have the materials they need, i.e. pencil, books, and paper.

• If you have concerns about the work, contact the teacher and set up a conference by phone or email.

• Be sure to let the teacher know if your child has trouble completing work.

In the primary grades:

• Read with your child every day.

• Ask your child questions about the story such as: who are the characters, problems/solutions, where does the story take place and why did the author write the story?

• Have your child explain to you what they are supposed to do on their homework

• Help your child with the directions if they don’t understand them.

In the intermediate grades:

• Set a 30 minute time for your child to read each day.

• Find an older child or relative who can assist with schoolwork when you are not home.

• Check to see if your child has completed work before bedtime.

• Help your child plan their schedule so it will not interfere with their homework.
