Provide a regular time to do homework and have a quiet area with the TV off.
Check your child’s homework folder each night.
Make sure they have the materials they need, i.e. pencil, books, and paper.
If you have concerns about the work, contact the teacher and set up a conference by phone or email.
Be sure to let the teacher know if your child has trouble completing work.
In the primary grades:
Read with your child every day.
Ask your child questions about the story such as: who are the characters, problems/solutions, where does the story take place and why did the author write the story?
Have your child explain to you what they are supposed to do on their homework
Help your child with the directions if they don’t understand them.
In the intermediate grades:
Set a 30 minute time for your child to read each day.
Find an older child or relative who can assist with schoolwork when you are not home.
Check to see if your child has completed work before bedtime.
Help your child plan their schedule so it will not interfere with their homework.
