EARLY RELEASE DAYS

Early Release days are provided by the Buncombe County School District to allow teachers to meet with parents, plan curriculum and work on student portfolios. All students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Buses will run their regular routes (just 2 hours earlier.) Parents who pick up their children will need to make plans to do so at 12:30. If you need to have someone else pick up your child, please send a note, so the teacher will be able to release your child to someone other than yourself.

HEALTH FAIR

The health fair is a once a year event where students’ health is assessed. Depending on the child’s grade level, they may have their eyes checked, teeth screened by a dental hygienist, and their hearing assessed by professionals. All children will have their height and weight recorded. If there is concern, parents will receive a note asking that they follow up with a medical professional. This is one event that needs help from volunteers! Please contact the office if you are able to volunteer.

OPEN HOUSE/CURRICULUM NIGHTS

Open House/Curriculum nights are very important event parents need to attend! On this night the teachers will share information with you about their class, including the rules, assessments, and information about how you can help your child.

RIF

RIF stands for Reading is Fundamental. These are favorite days for students at Johnston! The gym is decorated in a particular theme and students visit with their class. They listen to a guest reader and then the students read with parents, volunteers and friends. At the end of the session, each child gets to pick one book to add to their own collections at home! This is another great opportunity to volunteer!

TERRIFIC KIDS AND HONOR ROLL ASSEMBLIES

On assembly mornings, students will gather in the gym with parents, grandparents, etc. to watch those students receive awards from their teachers. Parents will receive a notice a week prior to your child receiving a reward. Awards are based on good citizenship, grades, and behavior. Sometimes, we even give a bike away to a lucky behavior winner!!!!!

ESL NIGHT

ESL means English Second Language and ESL night means a fun night for all! ESL night is for parents of our English as Second Language students and all parents of Johnston Elementary to come learn about our diverse population. Please bring a covered dish of your favorite ethnic food. Some of the information that will be discussed will be the ESL program and how parents can assist their child at home. This is usually a lively event filled with lots of questions, fun and speaking in other languages!

FUNDRAISERS

Throughout the school year, we will have fundraisers such as Spring Fling, School Checks and catalog sales. Participation is voluntary, BUT we need your support! The money raised goes to buy new playground equipment, computers and/or materials for the school that otherwise we would not have.

PTO PROGRAMS

PTO programs are exciting nights and always provide entertainment. Mr. Bridges will give an update on the school and its programs, followed by a performance by our students! Be sure to allow time for parking and be on time or you might miss the show.

ASHEVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT CLOWNS

The Asheville Fire Department Clowns will visit our school to demonstrate fire safety. Be sure to make a plan for how to get out of your house quickly in a fire.

AWARDS DAY

On the last day of school, we will have our Awards Day. Students will get awards from special area teachers, classroom teachers and Mr. Bridges. Parents will receive a letter if their child will be getting an award on this day.
