Clyde A. Erwin High School was inspired from the memory of the great educator, Dr. Clyde Atkinson Erwin.  Dr. Erwin assumed the duties of the State Superintendent and served for eighteen years in this capacity.  During the time of Dr. Erwin’s superintendence, tremendous strides were taken toward the advancement of public education.  The nine month school term and twelve year public school period were initiated; free textbooks were made available to elementary students; a school health program was established; standards of certification for teachers were raised with subsequent teacher benefits, such as salary increases and the establishment of a retirement program.  Dr. Erwin believed that every child should have the opportunity to develop his capacity to the greatest extent.  He believed it was his duty to make it possible for the school children of North Carolina “to see clearly, act courageously, and find their way to peace and security.”
