Erwin’s 9th Grade Junior Beta Club walked in the "March of Dimes" walk in downtown Asheville on Saturday, April 20. We raised almost $300 and our students had a great time at the event! Students who walked included Jasmine Lee, Erika Stiltner, Bradley Alfieri, Elizabeth Hiler, Ashlee McClusky, Megan Emery. Click on above link for pictures.
Congratulations to Brian Gonzales who was chosen as one of 25 educators in the entire Buncombe County School system who to receive the Excellence in Literacy Teaching Award from the Great Smokies Reading Council. Brian was chosen for the engaging and effective literacy instruction he incorporates into his classes each day. Brain uses literacy to teach his content, improving the reading skills and content vocabulary of his students along the way. In addition, Brian's leadership as a founding member of Erwin High's Literacy Leadership Team has helped spread effect practices into many of our own classrooms.
Fourteen students from Clyde A. Erwin High School traveled to Greensboro April 15th-17th to compete in STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2013 North Carolina Leadership Meeting. All high schools in Buncombe County participated in the "Playhouse Showdown". This competition based project involved many areas of Career Technical Education classes. These classes participated in designing, building, decorating and marketing a child's playhouse. Each school competed to be chosen the winner for the best Playhouse at the Homebuilders Association Event. At the end of the competition the playhouses were raffled off. Students received free books on Tuesday, April 23! The Media Center celebrated World Book Night by giving away 40 free books to students who came by during their lunch periods on a first come, first serve basis! The give-away books were The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo and Looking for Alaska by John Green. Click on the link above for pictures of the event.
National Library Week was April 14th -20th. Erwin High School's Media Center celebrated National Library Week April 15th -19th. Students and staff came by daily to register to win free books. To see the 2013 Library Appreciation winners click on the above link.
"Bring Your Own Device" will debut on a trial basis April 1 in BCS middle and high schools, with the goal of engaging, enriching and enabling students to be more successful.
