SUBSTITUTE TEACHER HIRING PROCESS
Substitute teachers are employed by the Buncombe County Schools on an as-needed basis to fill in for absent classroom teachers and media coordinators. In order to be a substitute teacher, an individual must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or its equivalency (GED) and must be approved by the Buncombe County Board of Education.  Also, in order to remain on the active substitute list, individuals must substitute a minimum of one (2) times per semester and a minimum of four (4) times per school year.  Failure to meet this requirements will result in the individual being inactivated and a minimum of a six month waiting period will apply before you can re-apply to be on the substitute list.  Please be aware that due to a backlog on the number of substitutes applications that we process, it may take several months before your name is added to our approved substitute teacher list.  Please take this into consideration before applying.

If you do not have a teaching license
The applicant must complete a 30-hour workshop, Effective Substitute Teacher Training. Evidence of completion of this training must be provided prior to application. Locally, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) and the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) provides this training.  The cost for the training at A-B Tech is $120 and this fee does not include the cost of the textbook, which currently is approximately $23 plus tax.  The cost for the training at UNCA is $95 and this fee does not include the cost of the textbook, which currently is approximately $25 plus tax - click here for a registration form.

To begin the process you will need to do the following:

STEP 1
Buncombe County Schools requires that all applicants for all positions complete the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) online application. When completing the online application you must choose to submit the application to "Buncombe County Schools." Your application will be submitted within 24 hours.  To make sure that your application has been received, please e-mail Barbara Harrison or call 828.232.4234.  The application must be completely filled out.  Failure to submit a complete application may delay processing of the application.

STEP 2
Fill out the appropriate Substitute Employment Forms and mail a copy of your teaching license or evidence of completion of the Effective Substitute Teacher Training to

Buncombe County Schools
Personnel Department
Attn: Sub Application
175 Bingham Road
Asheville, NC 28806

Alternatively, you can scan and e-mail your materials to Barbara Harrison.

STEP 3
Your application will then be reviewed, references called, and a complete background check will be completed. If acceptable, your application will be submitted to the Board of Education for approval at its next regular meeting.

Substitute teachers play an important role in the everyday operation of the local school. It is extremely important that the job responsibilities are understood and followed. Click here to review the Substitute Teacher Job Description.

NOTE: Because substitute teachers may serve in many schools with limited ability for consistent supervision, a complaint from any school about the performance of a substitute teacher may result in excluding that substitute from the schools' substitute teacher list and/or removing that substitute from the Buncombe County Schools' approved substitute teacher list.

Substitute Pay

Substitute Teacher Pay is 65% of beginning teacher pay per day for approved substitutes holding a teaching license ($91.00 per day). Approved substitutes not holding a teaching license are paid at a rate of 50% of beginning teacher pay ($70.00 per day). Checks are mailed monthly on the last working day of the month.

If you have any further questions in reference to substitute teaching, please contact Barbara Harrison or call 828.232.4234.
