  • Welcome back!

Posted by Lorraine Orenchuk at 8/13/2012
I am looking forward to a great year exploring British Literature and collaborating together. To help us get moving I would love you to introduce yourself here and share some information about yourself by answering the following questions. What have been your biggest challenges and successes in English to date? What are you looking forward to the most in British Literature? What accomplishment are you most proud of to date (please brag!) and what challenge has been the most difficult? Perhaps we can surprise and support one another here in this space.

Welcome to English IV. I had the pleasure of learning with many of you in year one. As we reacquaint ourselves I thought it would be wonderful to share some of the changes you have enjoyed as English/Language Arts students since 2008. What have been your biggest challenges and successes in English to date? What are you looking forward to the most in British Literature? What accomplishment are you most proud of to date (please brag!) and what challenge has been the most difficult? Perhaps we can surprise and support one another here in this space.

One last thing, I am really, REALLY glad that you are here.  Let the learning begin!

  • How do you learn best?

Wordle: How do you learn best?
(Click the link to view the results on the Wordle website.)
I created a Wordle out of the responses to this question.  The larger words are those that were used most often.  If you haven't already used Wordle, give it a try.  It is a wonderful tool and can be used in many subjects.  Are you surprised by the results?  Please elaborate on your learning style and share your ideas for expanding the delivery of British Literature in the most effective style for you.

We worked in groups today to share articles about heroes. The activity required open discussion and movement as you shared your reflections with one another.  Please take a moment and reflect on this activity.  Remember to check back and respond to one another's comments.

Here is your first blog post.  I want to know what you think of the personal poetry assignment.  Were you surprised by each others' submissions?  Did you enjoy learning more about your peers?  Share your insights and reactions.

January 20th is a historic day for the United States.  Some of you were able to vote this year. How does it feel to know that we will have a new president in a little over a week?  What are your hopes for our country?  What are the biggest challenges you think our new president will be facing?

  • What Matters To You?

There is a website collecting 1000 comments from people all over the world to find out what  people will care about tomorrow.  They ask that responses are given in two sentences or less.  Pretty sweet!  Please consider today's journal prompt regarding the word chosen as your intention for the year and see if you can come up with something that resonates with you.

What matters to you? Tell us in 160 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, etc.) or less. Think carefully about this. What is most important to you in 2009?

Welcome! This aspect of the school website has just been made available to us. In the spirit of communication, let's see how we like it. How do you feel the first six weeks have been? What are the things you feel the best about? What are you hoping to improve in the next six weeks? How can I help you do that? I am really glad that you are here on this journey with me. Go Pioneers!

After reading the Letters to the President from other schools in the country discuss your reaction to their entries following the guidelines below:  What state and school were your letters from? What topics were being discussed?  How were the arguments presented? Did you find the letter convincing?  Why?  Did you find the letter unconvincing?  Why? Report on at least three letters.  What do you think of your letter now? (Label your posts as NWP-Letter to Pres)
