Attendance
The elementary school attendance policy adopted by our
School Board adheres to North Carolina state laws pertaining to
student attendance. Buncombe County Board Policy requires that
students in grades K-5 who are absent more than 14 days in a school
year attend an attendance school make-up program. The number of sessions and times will be decided by the principal. Parents will be responsible for transportation and will be responsible for the $50.00 tuition for the attendance program.
Students must be in attendance for more than half the day (11:10) to be counted present for the day. Upon returning to school from an absence, students must bring a parent note or doctor’s statement giving the reason for the absence. Doctor’s or dentist’s appointments will not be excused for a whole day’s absence, unless the doctor deems it to be medically necessary and states so in a note.
Undocumented absences and absences which do not comply with state law as “excused” will be coded “unexcused”. A Report of Unlawful Absences may be filed if the child continues to accumulate unexcused absences.
Five unexcused tardies (students must be in classroom at 7:50 am) or five unexcused early sign-outs (before 2:30) or any combination of five tardies/early sign-outs will result in a day of absence. Students are responsible for assignments missed during all absences and arrangements should be made to complete the work in a timely manner upon their return to school. A copy of the attendance policy will be provided to all students on the first day of school.
Perfect attendance is a tremendous accomplishment for a student. To be eligible, a child can miss no days and can have a combination of no more than 4 unexcused tardies and leave earlies during the school year.
