Change is everywhere; it is inevitable, and like it or not, we must face those changes with a postitive attitude:  so sit down, buckle up, and hang on for the ride of your life!

Once known as "Careers" or  "Home Ec", this class deals with the ever changing world and how that change affects careers in the future--more specifically, what careers your student will ultimately hold after high school.

About Me:
I  was born in Asheville and raised here in Weaverville and currently call the Beech Community my home.  I graduated from North Buncombe High School (which is the current Middle School) .  After graduation, I attended Mars Hill College; majoring in Business Education.  After completing my undergraduate degree, I entered graduate school at Western Carolina University where I obtained my Master's in Business and Vocational Education; I am certified to teach grades 6 - 12.  I have been teaching in Buncombe County for 26 years!!  (time sure flies).

I have been married for 29 years to my high school sweetheart and have been blessed with two beautiful daughters ages 23 and 19.  My oldest daughter is a RN working in Johnson City, Tennessee at Mountain States Health Alliance (Johnson City Medical Center) .  She works as a Labor and Delivery Nurse. My youngest daughter is a Sophomore at Western Carolina University.  She is a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and is majoring in Elementary Education with a Minor in English.

I enjoy attending UNC Basketball games when I get a chance, cooking, collecting UNC items for my classroom, being outdoors, and the BEACH!

New program focus in Career and Technical Education at

 North Buncombe Middle School

Career and Technical Education courses at North Buncombe Middle will focus on building students’ knowledge of new and innovative careers while providing them with real world experiences in three different areas.  Sustainable Agriculture and Green Building will be highlighted in the Exploring Biotechnology curriculum.  Personal Finance and computer skills will be the focus of the Exploring Business Technology course while Healthy Living and Fundamental Life Skills will be taught in Exploring Life Skills course. Activities for students will include:  preparing healthy snacks and completing a basic sewing project in Exploring Life Skills, keeping a log of expenses and how students spend money (budgeting) and recording the information in spreadsheet form will be completed in the Exploring Business Technology, and finally students will design a green/sustainable project and extract DNA from a strawberry in Exploring Biotechnology course.

For eighth grader students, career interest inventories, exploring careers in Agriculture, Health Sciences, Business and Marketing and Public Service, and preparing students for high school registration will be the focus.  Since graduation requirements continually change, the need for students to understand what he/she is interested in and how they can accomplish their goal of either post secondary education or entering the world of work or the military is essential.  Students will interact with the career teachers and the Career Development Coordinator allowing for an easy transition to high school.  This program is the only program in the county that offers this intensive career cluster focus and seamless middle to high school transition.

This is an exciting new time for NBMS as they become a Career-Focused middle school.
